Hey guys.....I have a friend who is considering the purchase of a new computer. He is considering two, both HP.

Link:

The last time I purchased a retail computer was at least 15 years ago, maybe more. In addition, I have not kept up with Intel chips, because I build only with AMD. Ask me about AMD CPU's and I will load you up with opinions, but not Intel.

This guy does general office work at home, with some light video editing. Not the heavy duty stuff, just cutting out bad shots and splicing together, that kind of stuff, so it's not heavy system demand.

In addition to my ignorance with Intel, I have a dim view of SFF cases (Small Form Factor). I have seen them overheat when stressed. There will be no extreme stress in this situation.

#1:  14th Gen Intel 20-Core i7-14700  This would seem to be the best one, but I am not sure about the case.

#2: Intel i-Core i3 13100

I wouldn't mind building him one, but I need a break after my last build. I would appreciate any thoughts.

Personally, I would never buy an OEM desktop today. Everything is proprietary including the PSU. In the below video for the G9 SFF all the front ports including the power switch are soldered to the MB. But, it does look like it's easy to disassemble and replace components. If I had a choice I would go with #2. Does he need a SFF or MFF?

There are companies that will build a PC with standard components.

Hi, you state that use is video no matter how light you can not use integrated graphics off the chip.      As it States it's a HP and a business system. Not appropriate for graphics.

for 1400.00 not geed enough.

I have the i-7 14700KF  wonderful chip.                  If do not mind the case fan lights NVIDIA 5060. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060, released in May 2025 ,    solid mid-range GPU that offers a noticeable performance improvement over the previous generation RTX 4060, especially at higher resolutions like 1440p

provides a good value for the price. https://xoticpc.com/collections/ready-to-ship?filter.v.price.lte=1430.00  In the US. Ships in days and Life time parts labour warranty (bought laptop from them shipped here, paid shipping and duties myself} but free in US  Check them out  price I adjusted for HP match price.  Maybe

Customize page 649.00. change processor so can change ram to DDR5. Way under the HP price

Hey, thanks John, appreciate the return.  I don't think he cares what form factor the case is. Both units are getting good reviews on Amazon. For the money, I am tempted to recommend the Intel 20-core (the first option); I would guess it is a quicker unit, considering the CPU specs; there are less reviewers than the other choice, but they all love it. Of course, what happens 2 years from now is anybody's guess, and these retail companies are not renowned for their customer service.

When I worked for a pro-AV company, I had to use SFF units because space was an extreme premium at the big trade shows; usually I had to spec them in small spaces to run the video walls and sound/PA systems. They always overheated, so I would have spec them with a small circulating fan. Sometimes we even removed the slde cover to increase circulation!

But...that appears to be the way retail computers are going now...AIO is the latest rage, but they are a nightmare to work on (IMHO).

@PK....thanks for the informed answer! I will look in to your references!  Thanks to you both for posting in!   :cowboy:
